UNDERSTANDING THE PASSION WEEK IS DIFFICULT FOR VARIOUS REASONS, BUT MAINLY BECAUSE THE BIBLE HAS BEEN WRITTEN IN SUCH A WAY THAT ONLY THOSE WHO TRULY DESIRE THE TRUTH WILL FIND IT. Jesus Said That The Scriptures Bear Witness To Him, When Referring To The Old Testament. Therefore we ought to see prophecy and types being fulfilled in the Passion Week from beginning to end—and we do!

✅  Here is a scripturally consistent chronology of the Passion Week, bringing together all the Scriptures to form a clear timeline of events that shows Jesus was in the tomb for three days and nights, not the two nights and one day celebrated by tradition.

πŸ” Key Clarifications:

πŸ“Œ 1. Nisan 12 DaylightPreparation Day for the Meal with Disciples

  • A facility is prepared earlier for Jesus to have a special Passover meal with His disciples.

πŸ“Œ 2. Nisan 13 Night (Start of Nisan 13)Jesus’ Final Supper

  • Jesus says, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Luke 22:15).
  • This is not the national Passover, which was eaten the following night (Nisan 14). It's a special covenantal meal, where He institutes the bread and wine (New Covenant).
  • Arrest and trials happen through the night.

πŸ“Œ 3. Nisan 13 DaylightCrucifixion and Burial

  • Jesus is crucified and dies on Nisan 13, before the evening.
  • He is buried just after sunset before dusk, just as the lamb in Exodus 12 was to be consumed between the evenings.
  • This preserves the type: His body, like the lamb, was not to remain until morning.

πŸ“Œ 4. Nisan 14 Evening and DaylightNational Passover and Tomb Sealing

  • The chief priests and nation eat their Passover meal (per John 18:28).
  • The next day (Nisan 14 daylight) is when the tomb is sealed (Matt. 27:62) — this is the day after their preparation.
  • Thus, Jesus is already buried by the time of the national meal.

πŸ“Œ 5. Nisan 15High Sabbath (Unleavened Bread)

  • Begins at sunset after Nisan 14 (Thursday evening).
  • Women rest according to the commandment (Luke 23:56).

πŸ“Œ 6. Nisan 16Weekly Sabbath

  • Begins Friday at sunset, ends Saturday at sunset.
  • Jesus remains in the tomb through this second Sabbath.

πŸ“Œ 7. Nisan 17 Evening (Saturday Night)Resurrection

  • Jesus rises at sunset, completing three days and three nights exactly.
  • The empty tomb is discovered early the next morning (Sunday dawn).

🎯 Final Alignment with Prophecy

Prophetic Requirement                 How Fulfilled
“Between the two evenings” (Ex 12) ✅Jesus buried just after sunset (start of Nisan 14).
“Not remain until morning” (Ex 12)  ✅Buried the same day He died, no body left hanging.
“Three days and three nights” ✅From burial (Nisan 14 sunset) to resurrection (Nisan 17 sunset).
“After three days” ((Matthew 27:63; Mark 8:31; Mark 9:31; Mark 10:34—ESV))

✅Resurrection after full 3-day period, not on the 3rd day.
